Blackburn AirStik 2 Stage Bicycle Frame Pump

Product Description

With the Blackburn Airstik 2 Stage Mini Pump, you can max out your PSI's without quivering arms, thanks to the dual mode technology found in this pump. Feel the relief as you flip the toggle switch from 'High Volume' to 'High Pressure', which allows for easier pumping under pressure. Your buddies won't know the difference as you pump, pump, pump like a machine.Aluminum barrel and shaft construction make for a feathery 84g weight, and with rebuildable internals, this pump can be repaired if you choose to use it as a riot baton against that charging antelope. A cage mount is included for strapping this weapon-tool to your bike, and the pump has a presta-specific head. What does that mean? If your valves look similar to the ones on your car tires (schrader valves), you'll have to run out of the woods if you get a flat. That antelope is pissed. I purchased my first road bike in 25 years this Summer, and prepared for the inevitable flat by carrying a spare tube, tire irons, and this Blackburn AirStick 2-Stage pump. After 250 miles, there it was...a rear tire causing me to swerve suddenly. Gulp. Will the pump hold up after all?

The short answer is that the 2-stage mechanism really worked. With the pump switch set at "low", I was able to fairly quickly inflate the newly installed tube to full size and reasonable thumb-pressure firmness. This was maybe 60 lbs pressure, and maybe it took 60 strokes. Switching to "high" on the pump end, I tested to see how firm the tire could really get. On this setting, each stroke delivers only a small volume of high pressure air, but it makes a difference. After about another 60 strokes, the tire was quite firm to the touch (and I'm estimating that it resulted at about 100 psi). For getting back on the road, this was fine.

Would I use this as my everyday pump? Of... Read more

Not expecting a small light weight pump to work like a larger frame or floor pump I am quite pleased with this little AirStik 2. The 2 stage function is very useful, and high pressure pumping is surprisingly doable - knowing ahead of time that it would take many strokes to add a little bit of air.

Overall this is a well built little pump that you can carry in your rear jersey pocket that will save you if all your better plans fall through. I would recommend this pump.

2.0 out of 5 stars Great pump -- for a masochist, June 20, 2011
In one important sense, this pump does an excellent job -- it will quickly deliver plenty of air pressure to inflate your tires. And the pump is compact and beautifully made.

The trouble is that, unlike many compact pumps, this one provides no handle to steady the pump against the tire. That leaves you with only two options. You can hold the head of the pump with your fingertips, where they will get banged against the spokes and pinched when the piston closes. Or you can rely on the valve stem to resist the force of the piston -- and one reviewer has already described the likely effect, which is to rip the stem right off the tire. Valve stems are simply not designed to resist that kind of lateral force.

There are plenty of small pumps that provide a hand-hold near the head of the pump, and in retrospect I wish I had chosen one.
